So I haven't been able to find a copy of The Dark Knight here yet. This should not be surprising. Kathmandu has almost no movie theaters; my hotel has a room in the back with a projection screen and 25 folding chairs. They show dvds there for 100 Rs a seat. This gets a listing in Lonely Planet as a theater.
But we all expected to have the new Batman movie by now, thanks to the thriving bootleg dvd industry here. They come in from Russia and China (the Russian ones tend to be better) and are quickly copied and sold all over. The movies range from ridiculous straight to video sequels to films only shown at art houses back home.
This is nothing short of miraculous. Every conventional business here gets bogged down in endless red-tape and corruption, yet bootlegs are profitable, well-distributed, and high quality.

i love places where the black market is more efficient than the regular market. i guess it isn't that efficient though, if you don't have it yet. just make your own version of it, like in that michel gondry movie starring jack black.
